ScuppernongThey are a native of the south eastern United States of America, growing in a rather seasonal pattern as the grapes don’t really survive below 10°Fahrenheit, and can be severely affected below 0°F. The name “Scuppernong” comes from  the Scuppernong river in North Carolina. It is also the official state fruit. In some parts of the south however, they are known by several other names such as “scupadine” and “scupanon”.

Scuppernongs have a lot of uses. Of course, they make a quick and healthy snack as grapes are one of the few things that can satisfy your hunger, thirst, as well as your desire for several things to eat all put together. They can also be used in a variety of wines, jellies, jams and ciders. Besides, Muscadine grapes, especially Scuppernongs, are known to have several significant benefits for health in general.

Muscadine grapes, or Scuppernongs  in particular have quite a few other benefits. They are abundant in phytonutrients, which contain flavonoids including quercetin, which are capable of reducing blood clots, while at the same time taking care of certain harmful acids, which can prevent heart disease.

Another group of phytonutrients found in Scuppernongs are saponins. These saponins bind to cholesterol thus preventing it from being absorbed. Although it is only found in small quantities in the human body, manganese is essential for development of connective tissue, and is also important for the functioning of the brain and the nervous system.

Apart from their obvious nutritional value, Muscadine grapes can be used for making grape wine in one of the most simple ways possible.

All you need to do is clean and mash the grapes and let that stand for about 2 days. Drain the juice and add about three pounds of sugar while stirring well. This mixture needs to be transferred into jars and allowed to ferment for a few weeks, after which it can be put into bottles and corked. A month later, your wine is ready to drink.
